Frequently Asked Questions

Characteristics of a Cooperative:

  1. Member Participation: Every individual or business that becomes a member acquires shares and has a say in decisions. The principle of “one member, one vote” typically applies, regardless of the number of shares held.
  2. Democratic Organization: Cooperatives are structured democratically. Decisions are generally made collectively, often in member meetings.
  3. Purpose of Support: The main goal of a cooperative is to support its members and promote their economic or social interests. For instance, farmers in an agricultural cooperative may share equipment or jointly market products.
  4. Liability: Members are usually only liable up to the amount of their contributed shares, which reduces financial risk.

Examples of Cooperatives:

  1. Housing Cooperatives: Members benefit from affordable housing and stable rents.
  2. Banking Cooperatives: Members are co-owners of the bank, as seen with Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken.
  3. Energy Cooperatives: Citizens can join forces to invest in renewable energy and collectively produce sustainable power.

Cooperatives are often seen as particularly resilient and sustainable because they focus on the interests of members and the common good. They are a popular form of organization for those who wish to emphasize values like community and solidarity.
